Handy Hints
Posts and Rails
Timber. Make sure you get treated posts and rails etc. These are easily obtained from your local timber merchant or garden centre. Ensure your framework is strong enough for the situation i.e. if using privacy as a tall windbreak, you will require a much sturdier framework than a diamond lattice screen in a sheltered garden. You can either cement in the posts or if it is reasonably sheltered, you can use meta spikes which save a lot of digging. Use meta bolt-down plates if you want to attach to a solid surface such as cement or paving.
Vinyl. I have been unable to track down many suppliers of vinyl posts—www.fascias.com seem the major one. Their H Posts would not be suitable but they do posts and rails. If you want vinyl it might be worth checking with them. If you want a firm to do the job for you, contact www.everfence.co.uk and ask them to give you a quote.
Painting the framework
White lattice
You will probably want to paint the posts or framework white although we have seen it in a contrasting colour. We recommend Sadolin Superdec wood preserving paint, obtainable from many DIY or specialist paint shops but any outdoor paint will do.
Cedarwood lattice
Frames for the cedarwood lattice can be left plain or varnished but we have had a special colour mixed for us by Sadolin to exactly match the colour of the lattice. This can be made up by most paint specialists. Just ask us for the formula.
Cutting the Panels
The panels are easy to cut. If you do not have a jigsaw, a fine toothed hand saw (10-11 teeth to the inch) will do the job.
Attaching the Panels
Although you can use nails, we recommend rust resistant or stainless steel countersunk screws or roundhead rust resistant screws. This will enable you to take the panels down easily if you want to re-use them. The lattice should be pre-drilled with over-sized holes. Also when attaching panels next to each other, leave about a 5 mm gap to allow for expansion.
A few examples:

This is a screen we put up at the nursery, using diamond and privacy lattice. A total of 4 panels, 4 ft wide, with the middle two panels 6 ft high. The end panels were graded from 6 ft down to 4 ft high. Timber and finials were supplied by our local timber merchant, Fountain Forestry. Very attractive but easy and straightforward to build.

A screen in a Caribbean hotel. 8 ft high with door. The door is just a simple door frame with the lattice screwed on.

A patio was overlooked by neighbours, Wooden battens were attached to existing metal fence and lattice attached to it. Elongated fixing holes drilled through the lattice to allow for expansion.
