CYCLAMEN PLANT LIST
POPULAR HARDY SPECIES
HEDERIFOLIUM (NEAPOLITANUM). The easiest and most well known of the hardy species. There is a space in every garden for this lovely plant, be it on a shady bank, under trees or shrubs, in window boxes or troughs, particularly those receiving some shade. As they are supplied as growing plants, they should establish themselves quite quickly but it does take a few years to establish a large colony from self sown seedlings. Flowering season September/October. £1.50
CILICIUM. This dainty little species likes a more open and sunny position than the above. We have found it does very well in a sunny trough or rock bed but do give it a niche to itself as it does not like to be crowded out. Pretty shell pink flowers with a strong honey scent. Flowering season September/October. £2
COUM. This species is particularly welcome, flowering as it does in late winter and coming in a range of colours from white to deep crimson, with plain or marbled leaves. Plant under shrubs, beside hedges, in rock gardens, in fact anywhere which has reasonably well drained soil and provides some shelter from cold winds. Flowering season February/March. £1.50.

MIRABILE. Pretty little plant with flowers similar to Cilicium, except that they have a distinctive toothed edge. Some plants have attractive reddish colouration on the young leaves. September/October. Well worth trying in a sunny trough or rock garden £2.50
REPANDUM. A most attractive species flowering in late spring with bright pink flowers, strongly scented. Needs a sheltered shady situation as the leaves are thin and easily damaged by strong sunlight. Slow growing but will naturalise in time and they do particularly well in South West England. Very limited stock.£2.75
OTHER SPECIES– HARDY AND NON HARDY
AFRICANUM. Autumn flowering and similar to Hederifolium but with larger and more leathery leaves.£2.75
ALPINUM See Trochopteranthum
BALEARICUM. Member of the repandum family endemic to Mallorca. Small white flowers and variable marbled leaves often splashed with silver. Spring flowering. Not regarded as hardy, they will hybridise with other repandum forms.£3
CRETICUM Another repandum type found only on the island of Crete. Quite similar to Balearicum but they can always be distinguished as creticum has a sweet scent. Not the easiest to keep growing and flowering well.£3.50
CYPRIUM. Endemic to Cyprus, this species flowers in late Oct/November when few others are in flower. Dark green ivy shaped leaves and pinky/white flowers with a strong magenta blotch at the base.. Not hardy and does not seem to be very long lived. £3.50
GRAECUM. Endemic to Greece and parts of Turkey, this species has some of the most beautiful leaves of the genus. Autumn flowering. The flowers are quite large, in varying shades of pink. Needs plenty of warmth in the summer to flower really well but do not allow pots to dry out completely. Has been grown successfully outdoors in this country against a warm south facing wall but probably best in greenhouse or cold frame.£2.50
GRAECUM ‘GLYFADA’ From seed collected some years ago in Glyfada, Greece by Brian Mathew. Pure silver leaves and pale pink flowers. Few only. £3.50
LIBANOTICUM. This spring flowering species from Lebanon is one of the most beautiful of the genus. The large flowers emerge almost white and deepen to a delicate pale pink with deep red markings at the base of the petals. Distinctive grey/green leaves. Do not dry out too much in summer. Will grow outside in the UK in a sheltered situation. £3
PSEUDIBERICUM. Another delightful spring flowering species from Southern Turkey, with striking large magenta flowers and shiny dark green foliage. Hardy outside in a sheltered situation but it makes a fine pot plant. There are also rare rose and pale pink forms. A personal favourite.£3
PERSICUM. The wild parents of all our modern large flowered cultivars. Dainty elegant flowers in shades from white to deep pink, although most usually pale pink with mid green foliage, sometimes marbled with silver. Not regarded as hardy . Plant with tuber exposed. £2.50
REPANDUM PELOPONNESE FORM. This attractive Greek form usually has mid pink flowers, although there is a bright pink form (vividum). The leaves are usually deep green and heavily speckled with silver or white flecks but there are also plain leaved forms.. We have found these quite hardy.£3
REPANDUM X BALEARICUM. This cross is rather variable, but usually white or pale pink. The seed is fertile and as is usual with hybrids, the plants are quite vigorous. Well worth a try outdoors £4
REPANDUM X CRETICUM. The plants from this cross flower mainly white or palish pink but have the distinctive creticum scent. Again more vigorous than the parents.. May be hardy outdoors. £4.50
TROCHOPTERANTHUM (now renamed alpinum) This most attractive species from S.W. Turkey, flowers in January, when few others are in flower. Small spoon shaped leaves and generally deep pink flowers although there are pale pink forms with silvery leaves. Very dainty. Regarded as fairly hardy but probably better with some protection, it makes an excellent pot plant. After a good seed collection, we now have good stocks of one of my favourites. £3
